Abu Dhabi expands E20 highway with five-lane upgrade and four new bridges
Infrastructure upgrade targets rising transport demand
ABU DHABI – The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has launched a major infrastructure development and road expansion project on the E20 highway aimed at improving traffic flow and supporting growing mobility needs in the UAE capital.
The project focuses on easing congestion while enhancing connectivity across one of Abu Dhabi’s key transport corridors. It will also strengthen access to Khalifa City and the surrounding Zayed International Airport area through a series of large-scale road and infrastructure upgrades.
Road upgrade
One of the project's most significant improvements is the expansion of the E20 highway from three lanes to five in each direction, increasing road capacity to accommodate rising traffic volumes.
The upgrade also includes the construction of 10.5 kilometres of new ramps and loops, designed to improve traffic movement and provide smoother access between major routes. Four new bridges will also be built as part of the project, further enhancing connectivity and reducing bottlenecks along the corridor.
In addition, DMT will construct 1.5 kilometres of internal roads to strengthen links within Khalifa City and improve access to nearby destinations.
Infrastructure boost
Safety and supporting infrastructure form a major part of the development. The project includes the installation of eight signalised junctions across Khalifa City and the Zayed International Airport area, helping improve traffic management and road safety for motorists.
Alongside the roadworks, DMT will carry out extensive utility upgrades beneath the surface. These include 62 kilometres of stormwater drainage networks and 37 kilometres of irrigation networks to support long-term infrastructure resilience.
The project also features the installation of 485 modern streetlamps to improve visibility along the route.
Environmental enhancements are integrated into the development through an extensive landscaping programme along the E20 corridor. Existing trees will be carefully relocated and replanted as part of efforts to preserve the local ecosystem while expanding the transport network.
